Craig's Wise Words
This past week Craigslist founder Craig Newmark spoke to a class at New York University, my alma mater, about many topics including journalism and building brand, with some good advice for all us marketers:
"Do what you can on the Net to build up some kind of online reputation," Newmark counseled. "Who knows? ... You may want to start working on your own personal brand. Maybe start a blog and see if people will pay attention. You may be your own network."
Basically build a brand from sharing what you know as the master and expert of your domain. Regardless of how sexy your knowledge might be about plumbing, travel or whatever, there will be people out there who want to learn from you. Once you’re set up and contributing use Craigslist as your soapbox to promote your blog. Eventually you can sell the traffic to advertisers who want to reach your market.
